TASK

Analyze the communication strategies used in the segment supplied from
the Jerry Springer talk show (with Lyn, Ali and Kim talking to Jerry about their relationships). Your analysis should take into account interpersonal strategies, including both verbal and non-verbal, and also those related specifically to the medium used.

Within this section of the program the participants can be seen to shift their
communicative orientation between different parties in the process of developing the story. Taking into account the medium, the goals of this particular type of program, and the differing interactional parties, identify and examine the strategies employed by the host and his invited guests as they communicate with different addressees including the studio audience. You will need to pay particular attention to the host’s work in mediating between the interpersonal with an orientation to legitimate the overhearing audience(s).

You will need to do extra reading for this assignment. You will find it useful to transcribe sections of this segment. Your transcriptions should be included in an Appendix to your essay.
